Anmärkning: ECOLOGY OF MARINE INVASIONS AND INTRODUCTIONS A Nordic Post-graduate Course The course aims to provide doctoral students from the Nordic and Baltic countries as well as from the NW Russia, with updated knowledge of the ecology of and risks associated to introduced [alien] species in Nordic coastal waters, their negative and positive impact on native species and biodiversity, and their role in Man s ecology and economy. The course programme consists of formal lectures given by international experts, team-work, seminars by the students, and an excursion.Selected key species and topics will be discussed in detail, incl. the ecology of ballast water, risk assessment of alien species, interactions between invasive species and native ones, and technical solutions for handling ballast water. The invited teachers include James T.Carlton [USA], Inger Wallentinus [Sweden], and drs Sergej Olenin [Lithuania], Stephan Gollasch [Germany] and Kristina Jansson [Sweden].The course language is English.Travel and accomodation are free for ca 20 participants.TIME: August 5-14 , 1997 PLACE: Åbo Akademi University, Turku [Åbo], Finland ORGANIZERS: Prof.Erkki Leppäkoski/MSc Christoffer Boström, Dept. of Biology, Åbo Akademi University, BioCity, FIN-20520 Turku, Finland DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION: March 31, 1997 FURTHER INFORMATION: The Organizer, phone 358 2-265 4355, fax -265 4748, e-mail eleppakoski@abo.fi or cbostrom@abo.fi N.B.PhD-students in the Baltic countries and NW Russia: contact the organizers for a specific Application Form not later than January 31.Check also course information on the net: http://www.norfa.no/

The project aims at explaining the mechanisms behind the observed high diversity of seagrass ecosystems in the northern Baltic Sea, and studying how these mechanisms vary in space and time. This, with focus on how an invasive plant species [Zostera marina] creates and maintain a dependent fauna and flora.
